Maestro is the brand name established by the MasterCard organization to delineate its prepaid credit cards and debit cards from its standard credit cards. The brand was first introduced in 1992. The card is distributed on a multinational level to a wide range of people who prefer using cards branded by a reputable organization.
How it Works
A Maestro branded card can be used in one of two ways. When banks issue debit cards, those cards are usually branded and backed by a credit card organization such as VISA or MasterCard. When backed by MasterCard, the card could either say Maestro or MasterCard based on the contract between the bank and the MasterCard organization. While the debit card looks exactly like a standard credit card, customers are only permitted to use the card to the extent of the balance in their bank account. Any attempt to exceed that amount will result in a rejection.
Maestro Cards are also produced and sold as MasterCard's version of a prepaid card. Procedurally, customers are required to load money as prescribed onto the prepaid credit card. Note: there is usually a small loading fee. From that point on, they can use the card to withdraw cash or make purchases up to the extent of their prepaid card balance, less any fees. Again, any attempts to exceed that balance will be met with a rejected charge.
Maestro and the iGaming Industry
In many parts of Europe, Maestro is a popular banking option provided by many top online casinos and sportsbooks. Many responsible gamblers prefer using debit or prepaid cards because it prevents them from incurring debt. They are always restricted to making deposits only up to the extent of the "cash" they have available, which gives them a level of protection against potential gambling problems. Due in large part to the reputation of MasterCard/Maestro, most online gaming sites accept this card with great confidence because of the financial backing provided by a major brand name.
