Roulette Terminology

American Wheel
A roulette wheel that has a total of 38 numbers; 0, 00, 1 – 36.

Ball
A small plastic ball thrown into the spinning roulette wheel in the opposite direction of the spin. When the ball lands on one of the number pockets, it determines the payoff for each spin.

Black
A bet on all the black numbers.

Block Betting
A set of numbers on a specific section of a wheel, usually bet as a group in some roulette strategies.

Carre
Corner bet (French).

Colonne
Column bet (French)

Column Bet
A bet on a group of twelve numbers at the same time, grouped together by the 3 columns that make up the roulette table.

Combination Bet
Using one or more chips in the same position to bet on more than one number simultaneously.

Corner Bet
One wager placed on four numbers at the same time. Pays 8:1.

Coup
One roll, one decision.

Croupier
A casino employee who runs the roulette table.

Double Zero
A bet on the 00 number.

Dozen Bet
A bet on a group of three numbers on the roulette table: 1-12; 13-24; 25-36.

En Prison Rule
The player can either surrender half of the bet or allow the bet to be imprisoned for another spin. If this happens, the entire wage will be returned if won.

European Wheel
AKA French wheel.

Even Bet
Betting on all the even numbers. Pays 1:1.

Five Number Bet
Bets on numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, 3 at the same time. Casino has a 7.89% edge.

French Wheel
Roulette wheel with just one zero.

Grand Martingale System
A player attempts to get an additional chip profit after every loss.

Green Numbers
The zero and double zero.

High or Low Bet
A bet on a group of 18 numbers: 1-18 is low; 19-36 is high. Pays 1:1.

House Percentage
The advantage that the casino has over the player.

Inside Bet
A bet placed on any of the numbers directly inside the layout. Odds on these bets range from 5:1 up to 35:1

Line Bet
A bet on six adjoining numbers which pays 5:1.

Neighbors
The numbers adjacent to the winning number, on the left and right.

Odd Bet
A bet on all the odd numbers. Pays 1:1.

Outside Bet
Betting on anything but the numbers – red, black, odd, even, high, low, columns etc.

Parlay or Press
A player leaving his winnings from the previous bet on top of his current bet.

Red
A bet on the red numbers. Pay 1:1.

Run
A series of like results.

Single Number
A straight up bet which pays 35:1.

Six Number Bet
A combination of six inside numbers at the same time.

Slots
The sections of the roulette wheel which hold the numbers.

Special Line Bet
A bet on the first five numbers – 0, 00, 1, 2, 3.

Split Bet
An inside combination bet of two numbers simultaneously.

Square or Quarter Bet
A bet on a square of four numbers, which pays 8:1.

Straight Bet
A single wager on a single number. Pays 35:1

Straight Up Bet
Bets on just one number (0-36).

Street Bet
A bet on any three numbers in a line, which pays 11:1.

Toke
A tip for the dealer.

Trio Bet
A combination bet on three numbers simultaneously.

Wheel Checks
Unique unmarked chips used specifically on roulette tables.

Zero
A bet on the 0 number. Pays 35:1.
